6G-TakeOff

Sep. 01, 2022 to Aug. 31, 2025

The 6G-TakeOff project is working on an uniform 3D communications network, in which flying network nodes provide functionalities together with terrestrial network components dynamically and according to demand. 6G-TakeOff will cooperate with European institutions and research projects to help shape future 6G standards.

The holistic approach required for this opens up space for innovations that go beyond the possibilities of the 3GPP 5G-NTN approach by exploiting the full potential of flying network components. Classes of network nodes include IoT/end-user devices, terrestrial access nodes, and 3D components such as Low Altitude Platforms (LAPS), High Altitude Platforms (HAPS), and satellites with their specific characteristics. A 6G system will connect these network components in a highly flexible, autonomous, where necessary infrastructure-independent way.

Fraunhofer FOKUS is advancing its Open5GCore and developing base technologies and prototypes of a new Organic Open6GCore within the Open6GHub project, and will commence testing its capabilities together with industry partners in various use cases during the 6G-TakeOff project.

FOKUS is part of a consortium of 22 partners under the lead of the Deutsche Telekom. The project “Holistic 3D Communication Networks for 6G (6G-TakeOff)” is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the initiative: “6G-Industrieprojekte zur Erforschung von ganzheitlichen Systemen und Teiltechnologien für den Mobilfunk der 6. Generation”.
